The first ordination in our new parish.
What a momentous weekend for our parish and Archdiocese – the ordination of Deacon Douglas Shepherd to priesthood - just 8 years after he was received into the Catholic Church by Monsignor John Carde who was the parish priest of Saint Anthony’s Seatoun at the time.
John tells the wonderful story of the time they first met which was at Doug’s interview for a teaching position at the parish school. He says ‘Doug was most unimpressed’ that the parish priest should be on the interview panel – ‘what’s he doing here?’ he said!
Wise man that he is, John gave very little away but continued to encourage Doug, who as a practicing Anglican, was also a member of the local vestry. After Doug had led Saint Anthony’s sacramental programme with such panache, John suggested that he should think about becoming a priest – a suggestion that was dismissed at the time by Doug…
Eventually the ways of the Lord shone through and we are blessed in Doug’s generous response to God’s grace. Ad multos annos!
